Why choosing the right saddlepad matters

Saddle Fit

Half pads can alter the fit of the saddle, and used incorrectly, can hinder appropriate and well fitted saddles. You must always work with your saddle fitter to choose the right half pad for you.

The Prolite Solution: The Prolite Fleece Range and Original Range provide spinal clearance, with webbing connecting the left and right sides of the half pad, providing an element of rigidity and because of its properties, the foam pad can absorb shear forces and hence withstand the locomotor and saddle forces which may otherwise cause the half pads to displace. Improves saddle fit and comfort when used beneath a properly fitted saddle, without compromising stability.

Thickness and Padding

Different saddles and horses may need different thickness and size of pads to ensure that good saddle fit is maintained, to ensure horse comfort.

The Prolite Solution: The Prolite pad allows unrestricted lateral movement across the top of the pad while ensuring total stability underneath, preventing restrictions during trot and canter.

Shock Absorption/Materials

Different materials have different shock absorbing properties.

The Prolite Solution: Our research shows our foam to outperform gel pads and yield similar benefits in terms of pressure reduction and distribution as wool.

Our pads protect the horse’s back by absorbing impact and minimizing pressure buildup in dynamic gaits like trot and canter.

Adjustability

Horses are constantly evolving in shape due to growth, muscle development, training intensity, seasonal changes, and overall conditioning. Young horses, in particular, experience continuous growth, while mature horses may undergo fluctuations in muscle tone and topline shape depending on workload, diet, and fitness levels. The Prolite Solution: We recognize that purchasing a new saddle for every fluctuation is neither practical nor cost-effective for owners. That’s why adjustability is a key feature in our half pads, ensuring that saddle fit remains optimal over time. Our pads are designed with versatility in mind, allowing for minor fit corrections and enhanced comfort without compromising stability. Four pockets with inserts can be used or removed as necessary to alter the pad depth at the front or rear. They can also be shimmed asymmetrically to help address saddle slip.

Durability and Maintenance

Different materials will change properties over time, so a once new wool or gel pad, will degrade, altering its performance under the saddle. Wool pads may lose their crimp and compression resistance with use, reducing their ability to distribute pressure.

The Prolite Solution: Our foam pad maintains its structure and effectiveness over time, ensuring consistent pressure relief and support.
